Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows: A positive place for kids in Fernley

Fernley Day in the Park 13

The Boys & Girls Club of Fernley started when the town’s existing after-school program was closed in 2010 due to a cut in county funding. The idea of opening a Boys & Girls Club had been considered for years, but now it was time to make it a reality…and the community responded. As we start to wrap up the 2011-2012 school year, we are proud to say that we have passed 1000 kids and are now serving close to 1500 members in the Fernley area.

School Year

During the school year, the Club run’s youth morning and afternoon programming at Fernley Intermediate School, Cottonwood ES, and East Valley ES with a lunch & after school teen program at Silverland MS. The morning programs will start at 6 a.m. until school starts each weekday, while the elementary and teen programs will run from release until 6 p.m. each weekday. Fees are $4 for morning and $4 for afternoons during the school year for elementary and intermediate students, and free for middle and high school students. Annual Club memberships are $20, and scholarships/financial assistance is also available on an as-needed basis.

Fernley Ballers and Winter Basketball

We just wrapped up the first Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows Winter Basketball League.  The league had over 300 students between the ages of 6 and 12 and close to 75 volunteers from the Fernley community participating in the seven week league.  We continue to encourage all kids in the community to stay active by playing games at our Friday night open gym, and work on their basketball skills at Ballers ball handling practices every Saturday morning.  Open gym is held every Friday from 6-9pm at Fernley Intermediate School, participants are able to come in and shoot hoops, jump rope, play tag, or start a game of dodge ball just to name a few options.  Ballers ball handling practices are held every Saturday from 8-9:30am at Fernley High School, participants are given the opportunity to come in and learn new basketball skills or strengthen already existing skills.
